Tracked crane travel system

[ May 21, 2026 ]

The function and composition of the crawler crane travel system: The function of the crawler crane travel system is to support the crane body and convert the torque transmitted from the diesel engine to the drive sprocket into the mechanical travel and operation required for movement, forward movement, backward movement, and rotation.

The crawler crane travel system is usually composed of components such as the lower frame, telescopic cylinder, tracks, travel motor, support rollers, carrier rollers, tension rollers (or guide rollers), and tensioning mechanism. Compared with the tire travel system, the crawler crane travel system has the following characteristics:

(1) Larger support area and lower ground pressure. For example, the ground pressure of a crawler crane is 20~80 kPa, while the ground pressure of a tire crane is generally 200 kPa. Therefore, crawler cranes are suitable for operation in soft or muddy ground, with less sinking and rolling resistance, resulting in better passability.

(2) The tracks have teeth on the support surface, making them less prone to slippage and providing good travel performance, which is conducive to maximizing travel capabilities.

(3) Complex structure, heavy weight, large inertia, poor vibration damping, and easily damaged parts. Therefore, the driving speed cannot be too high, and the maneuverability is poor.
