Motor Grader Hydraulic Cylinder – Bore, Stroke and Mounting Guide
A motor grader uses several hydraulic cylinders for steering, blade lift, articulation and other functions. Cylinders that look alike can differ in stroke, port orientation, pin centres and internal area. Identify the exact machine function before comparing dimensions.
Cylinder data required for fitment
| Feature | Record |
|---|
| Application | Machine function, side, model and serial number |
| Envelope | Pin-centre length closed and extended, verified stroke and overall clearance |
| Hydraulic size | Bore and rod diameter from trusted data or controlled measurement |
| Mounts | Eye/clevis/trunnion type, pin diameters, boss widths and offsets |
| Ports | Thread, seal, size, orientation and any valve block |
Diagnose leakage or drift
External rod-seal leakage, internal bypass and valve leakage require different tests. Inspect the rod for scoring, pitting or bending and check pins and mounts for side loading. A seal kit alone may not repair a damaged rod, barrel or piston.
Safe removal and commissioning
Lower or mechanically support the connected structure and release stored hydraulic pressure using the approved procedure. After installation, bleed or cycle as specified at low speed, check hose routing and inspect both travel limits for binding.

FAQ
Can a cylinder be matched by closed length?
No. Stroke, mounts, ports, bore, rod and application also matter.
Does implement drift prove cylinder bypass?
No. The control valve and load-holding circuit must also be tested.
Can a scored rod be fixed with new seals?
New seals may be damaged again; evaluate the rod and guide condition.
Compatibility note: Confirm the cylinder function and complete geometry before ordering.
