Motor Grader Slewing Gear Ring – Tooth and Mounting Inspection
A motor grader slewing gear ring guides blade-circle rotation. A correct replacement must match the tooth form, ring diameter, bolt circle and mounting-face geometry. Visual similarity does not establish fitment.
What identifies the gear ring?
| Check | Evidence to record |
|---|
| Gear teeth | Tooth count, pitch or module, width, pressure-angle reference and internal/external engagement |
| Ring geometry | Outside/inside diameter, thickness, pilot and step dimensions |
| Mounting | Hole count, bolt-circle diameter, hole size and datum face |
| Machine | Model, serial number, circle-drive position and mating pinion marks |
How should wear be assessed?
Inspect the full circumference, not only the most visible sector. Uneven polishing, hooked tooth flanks, pitting or a tight sector can indicate alignment, lubrication or mounting problems. Measure backlash at several circle positions using the service procedure. Check the mating pinion because a worn pinion can rapidly mark a new ring.
Installation scenario
Clean the support and verify that the ring seats without trapped scale or distortion. Follow the specified bolt sequence and tightening values. After assembly, rotate the circle slowly through its range and confirm consistent mesh, lubrication coverage and clearance.

FAQ
Is outside diameter enough to select the ring?
No. Tooth data, bolt circle, thickness, pilots and machine identity are also required.
Why measure backlash at several positions?
Variation can reveal ring distortion, eccentric mounting or local wear.
Can only the ring be replaced?
Inspect the mating pinion and supports; incompatible wear can damage the replacement.
Compatibility note: Confirm complete gear and mounting geometry against the machine serial number.
